Intent

At Grange Infant School, we aim to provide a high quality PSHE curriculum that enables all children to become life-long learnings, acquire the necessary skills, including emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development, to support the understanding of the world and how to become global, happy citizens. We strongly believe that every child has the right to the necessary tools and knowledge to better understand themselves, others and the world around them; whilst also promoting attitudes and practical skills to improve their life chances to be a part of both the global and school community.

Our curriculum covers a range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. Our children will learn about British values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) concepts, and how they can support children’s understanding and finding their place within the world they live in. A key aim within our school is to provide children with the ability to express, discuss and question their own opinions and experiences, alongside those which they may not have experienced. We hope that all of our children will have a strong understanding of the diverse world we live in, and be equipped to be responsible for the their own wellbeing and stay safe in our ever-changing society.

Implementation

At Grange Infants, PSHE lessons are delivered through the Jigsaw scheme. This scheme enables Grange Infants to follow a consistent whole-school approach, whilst equipping teachers with appropriate and supportive materials to help the effective teaching of PSHE. Each half term, the whole school complete the same ‘puzzle piece’, which are taught either once a week or blocked (every day over the course of a week). As we understand the range of needs present in our classrooms, teachers can adapt this scheme in order to reflect the needs of their pupils. The puzzle pieces we cover are:

>Being Me in My World

>Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

>Dreams and Goals

>Healthy Me

>Relationships

>Changing Me (including SRE)

All of our teachers aim to create a classroom environment where children feel safe, confident and valued. All of our lessons include the opportunity for circle time, during which children are given the opportunity to talk and share their ideas. Our Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness, allowing the children to be emotionally aware whilst improving their concentration and focus. PSHE is a vital part to our school and it is embedded throughout our curriculum and day to day school life, including whole school assemblies and key campaigns and themed days (show Racism the red card) and weeks (anti-bullying week and mental health week).

Impact

When our children completed their journey at Grange Infant School, they are able to :

>Express, discuss and question their own opinions and experiences

>Have a clear understanding of and demonstrate British Values alongside the schools values

>Have the courage to challenge themselves by trying new things resiliently

>Demonstrate kindness and respect towards themselves and others

>Understand and appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society

We measure the impact of our curriculum by:

>Discussing pupils learning with them and their classmates

>Half-termly formal assessments completed by teachers

>A clear learning journey for each half term demonstrating the progression across the school
